It is merely on end up it begins to fall apart, nevertheless smack-upwards finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you can wisely dialogued, it will have zero higher problem from inside the living down their very unsightly label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The movie movements in the a quick speed, the newest dialogue was smooth and you can characterisations basically energetic. Cock Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes direct the newest throw professionally, because the investigator was enjoyed significant aplomb from the that person personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody regarding the The fresh Yorker detailed “This terse and tight film noir are based on the brand new romantic and you can professional conflicts of one’s label character, the new unlawful mastermind (starred by Cock Powell) about an elegant unlawful local casino. The fresh film’s author and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess video game, to have mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) did at gambling establishment and dated a beneficial corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic software, the latest cast’s suavely regulated body language out of love and menace, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can fashionably assertive photographs (in addition to their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really detailed spectacle an invisible antique of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Pic keeps actions and suspense, and specific brief touches out-of jokes to incorporate taste. Ace activities by Knob Powell, given that a gaming house overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, since the an authorities inspector, along with within the score . Whilst the spot pursue a familiar development, new characterizations are fresh therefore the performances good enough to overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and you will topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney touch. Uncommon cam angles come-along once in a while in order to heighten attention and you will momentarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling since the manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, amazing author and you may user music producer, along with helps with making it a softer design.” [ eleven ]

It is generally an issue of viewing Mr. Powell go through his paces stylishly if you are a giant shed off actors and you will actresses render your vintage service. Evelyn Keyes performs the good nothing woman who brings about the latest finest in him and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the smooth and you may slinky vixen who becomes your into the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty since villain and Lee J. Cobb do a unique ready trip while the a weary cops inspector whom fundamentally shuts the truth. Many drinking and smoking is done of the the alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
